Experimental setup. Participants stood on a beam that was placed in a fixed position on a force plate, holding a cane in each hand. A set of 43 light-reflective markers measured displacements of the full body and the canes in 3D. The canes were instrumented with two 6D force/torque sensors at the bottom of each cane. The sketch shows the planar cane configuration where the two canes were placed to be on one line with the feet (planar configuration). In the tripod configuration, the canes were placed 45 degrees to the front to form a triangle with the feet
